Shawn is a Lawful Neutral (with Good tendencies) network consultant in his 30s. He’s been playing D&D since about 12, when his older cousin took him on his first adventure (killing his noble dwarf Silvertip with a man-eating plant). Shawn resides in Dallas, Texas, where he regularly games on Friday nights – “games” being used loosely, as their sessions tend to deteriorate quickly into discussions of obsolete operating systems and old movie quotes. This is Shawn’s first online PBM game, although he’s participated in several snail-mail games before. He draws his inspiration of Thaurlann from his own brooding self-righteousness, as seen in this picture by his portrayal of Obi-Wan Kenobi on the opening day of Star Wars: Episode 3.

Concept: A chivalrous warrior seeking glory in the name of Bane.
Appearance:

Despite his youthful face, Thaurlann’s oaken brown eyes smolder with zealous intensity. Golden blonde hair flows down to his shoulders, obviously marking him as an Outlander. His face, though, shows signs of the hardened determination common to the hardy folk of the Moonsea. Rarely does a wide grin or sour scowl cross his face; at the same time, his face rarely hides emotion, however small. When Thaurlann is not actively engaged in a conversation or fight, his eyes seem to focus on something in the distance, out of touch with the world directly around him. He seems to have a nervous energy that prevents him from being rooted in one spot.

His armor and equipment always appear to be well-used, as he rarely bothers to fix or clean anything until absolutely necessary. Also, his gear is usually borrowed as he tends to be excessively demanding of all his equipment.
Personality:

Unconditionally brave in battle - seemingly suicidal at times - Thaurlann always leads the charge against any foe, except when dictated otherwise by a member of the church. His mind is simple, focusing on one task at a time; he often has a hard time connecting together how things work unless told by someone else. Often, he’s been known to engineer clever tricks in the heat of battle to help turn the tide; but if he is faced with a complex situation and time to think about it, he often comes to incorrect conclusions. On the other hand, he’s an adept learner, picking up skills much more quickly than his seemingly dull wit would imply.

Magic and its use completely confounds Thaurlann, and he has adapted the Moonsea attitude that any witchcraft is dangerous business, to be meddled with at one’s peril. Magic is one of the few things known to instill fear into the young man’s heart.

A devoted worshipper of Bane, Thaurlann has latched onto many of the precepts of Moonsea culture and religion. Nothing is more important to him than serving the church, with one possible exception. Thaurlann has developed a boylike crush on Anya. The emotion possibly springs from a protective complex that has led him to believe himself to be her personal protector. He maintains a Cormyr-styled chivalry in the core of his heart, urging him to protect the defenseless (especially women) whenever it doesn’t directly conflict with his vows to the church.

Thaurlann is completely honest and straightforward at all times, and speaks with a conviction making him hard to disbelieve - even when his claims border on outrageous. Humor is not in his nature, and when he attempts a joke it is often impossible to tell. His actions appear to be a tad neurotic at times, as he has conversations with his horse (and himself) when faced with a particularly difficult decision. These episodes have become less frequent lately, as his increasing devotion to Bane has given him more confidence in his beliefs and helped him turn away from the “pagan” teachings of his Outlander upbringing. He believes his calling to Bane to be the ultimate purpose in his life, and knows in his heart that someday this calling will lead him to be a great hero.
